Most Bay Area museums close Thanksgiving Day (Nov 26) — reopening Fri Nov 27. Check hours before you go. Muir Woods fills completely during school break — reserve at recreation.gov several days ahead or there will be no slots. Return travel Sun Nov 29 is the busiest travel day of the year — SFO lines 2h+, Bay Bridge backed up, I-80 to Sacramento gridlocked by noon. Plan activities for Tuesday through Saturday to avoid peak crowds. Dog tip: Crissy Field, Mount Diablo, Tilden, Point Reyes (some beaches), Marin Headlands, and Coyote Hills all welcome leashed dogs. No dogs inside Muir Woods.

The Marin side is accessible via the Bridge cycling path or Hwy 101 (no wait Thanksgiving morning).

Late November gives Mount Diablo its clearest days of the year: low humidity, no summer haze, and on a good day you can see the Sierra Nevada from 3,849 feet. The Juanita Lake Loop (2.2 miles, easy) is perfect with kids. Drive to the summit instead — it only takes 20 minutes from the park entrance. The oak woodlands are turning golden. Thanksgiving morning traffic is zero.

Gray whale migration south begins in November — Chimney Rock at Point Reyes is one of the best shore-based viewing spots on the West Coast. The 1.5-mile Chimney Rock Trail runs right along the cliffs. No timed entry required for Thanksgiving Day (come back Bear Valley Visitor Center hours if open). Wind can be strong — bring layers. Kehoe Beach and Limantour allow leashed dogs.

Late November is the best wildlife month in the Bay Area. Gray whale migration heads south; elephant seals arrive on the coast; seabirds concentrate on the Bay. These picks are uniquely good right now and genuinely hard to find anywhere else.

The world's largest marine mammal rescue hospital lets you walk through the recovery pools and see seals, sea lions, and elephant seals up close — with educational signs about each patient's story. Free admission. Located inside the Marin Headlands, easily combined with a coastal walk. November is a busy intake season (storm injuries, pup strandings); expect to see a dozen or more animals.

Thanksgiving week is when the first adult male elephant seals haul out onto Año Nuevo beach — you can see them on the coastal trail before the main pupping season (guided walks start Dec 15). The 3-mile round-trip trail runs to the point; no guided tour required in November. A dramatic coastline with dunes, tidepools, and often dozens of seals already on the beach. Drive Hwy 1 south from Half Moon Bay. Book Dec 15+ guided walks early — they sell out.

Fall in Muir Woods is the best time of year: the summer crowds are gone, the redwood light in November is extraordinary (low sun angles through old-growth ferns), and the creek runs with the first winter rains. November is peak shorebird and waterfowl season at Coyote Hills — the freshwater marsh, bay mudflats, and upland ponds pull in thousands of ducks, herons, egrets, and migrating shorebirds. The 4-mile flat loop around the marsh is perfect for kids. Also: genuine Ohlone archaeological sites and reconstructed tule huts. Bay Area birders rate this among the top three fall birding spots on the entire bay shoreline. Small parking fee; no crowds.
