New Year's Weekend 2027 — Bay Area Family Guide
First-Day Hikes on January 1, family picks for New Year's Eve afternoon, and the quietest indoor days of the year on Jan 1–2. No midnight chaos required.
New Year's weekend heads-up
Embarcadero / Pier 39 / Fisherman's Wharf on Jan 1: avoid the whole corridor until noon — post-midnight crowds are still clearing out and parking is impossible. BART runs extended hours Dec 31 into Jan 1 — easiest way into SF if you're going to the Exploratorium or Crissy Field. Fort Funston is busier on Jan 1 morning than any other day of the year — arrive before 9am or after 2pm. Jan 1–2 is the quietest window for Bay Area museums all year; if you've been putting off Cal Academy or the Exploratorium, these two days have the shortest lines. Mount Diablo summit road may close in winter storms — check parks.ca.gov the morning of. Dog tip: Tennessee Valley Trail, Fort Funston (off-leash), Crissy Field, and Tilden all welcome leashed dogs (Fort Funston has a designated off-leash area). Indoor museums do not allow dogs.
First-Day Hikes — Jan 1 tradition
January 1 is one of the best hiking days of the year in the Bay Area: trails are uncrowded by 9am (most people slept in), the air is clear after winter rain, and the GGNRA runs a free First Day Hikes program at most sites. These four picks are doable with kids of any age — one for strollers, one for off-leash dogs, one for dramatic views, one for the biggest panoramic reward.
New Year's Eve — family picks before midnight
Midnight fireworks are spectacular if you don't have a toddler who needs to be asleep by 8pm. These picks let families mark the day with something special on the afternoon of December 31 — then get home, do a family countdown at 7pm (Pacific time = midnight somewhere), and put the kids to bed. None of these require staying out past dark.
Quiet indoor days (Jan 1–2) — when you just need to be inside
January 1 and 2 are the two quietest days of the year for Bay Area museums — the Christmas rush is over, most families are recovering, and school doesn't start until Jan 5 at the earliest. These are the best two days to do Cal Academy or the Exploratorium without a timed-entry sprint. Or pick a museum you've never tried: Oakland and San Jose are genuinely worth the drive.
